We’re eliminating all change fees for First, Business, Premium Economy and Main Cabin tickets for all domestic and short-haul international flying for tickets issued on or after August 31, 2020.
If your travel plans change, you can keep the full value of your original ticket but will need to pay the fare difference if your new flight is more expensive. If your new flight is less expensive, you’ll get the fare difference in the form of travel credit to use on a future trip.
Example: If you paid $500 for your flight and change to a new flight that costs $300, you’ll receive $200 in travel credit for a future trip.
The new change fee policy applies to AAdvantage® award tickets as well.
We’re extending our offer to waive change fees on any existing tickets* for travel March 1 – December 31, 2020. This offer includes Basic Economy fares and AAdvantage® award tickets.
Keep in mind:
Plus, if you have a ticket that is expiring between March 1 and December 31, 2020, the value of your unused ticket can be used for travel through December 31, 2021.**

You're allowed to make a change to your trip once, and the change fee will be waived. You can cancel your trip online and call later when you’re ready to rebook, including Basic Economy fares.

You can change or cancel your trip online in just a few steps. Here’s how:
You'll need your 6-character confirmation (also called a ‘Record Locator’).
If you don't know your Record Locator, you can find it in the confirmation email you received when you booked your trip.
AAdvantage® members can log in to their account to find upcoming trips.
Choose 'Change trip' or 'Cancel trip' in the top toolbar and follow the prompts.
When you’re done, we'll send a confirmation email that includes your ticket number.
Keep this handy so you can refer to it when you call to rebook.
When you're ready to rebook your trip, please call Reservations.
American tickets have a 13-digit number that begins with '001'. Keep in mind there are separate ticket numbers for add-ons like seats, upgrades and bags.
We'll send you an email with the information you’ll need, including your ticket number. Keep this handy so you can refer to it when you call Reservations to rebook.
When you check-in you'll be asked to confirm you've been free of COVID-19 symptoms for the past 14 days. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting sick.
A face covering is required while flying on American, except for children under 2 years old. If you decline to wear one, you may be denied boarding and future travel on American.
Keep in mind:
A recent Harvard University study estimates the use of face coverings on board may reduce infection risks from respiratory particles to less than 1%.

Several U.S. states and countries around the world are restricting entry or requiring a range of travel restrictions due to COVID-19. You may not be allowed to travel to certain destinations or may be required to self-quarantine when you arrive.
Keep in mind that travel requirements are updated often, so we recommend checking the latest entry requirements before your trip.
If you’re traveling at this time, we’re here for you and are making temporary changes to the travel experience to prioritize your safety.
Curbside check-in may not be available. Be sure to check your flight status before you go to the airport, as ticket counter hours may change daily without notice.
Due to the increased flight changes, we’ve stopped checking pets for now. Carry-on pets, service and emotional support animals are still allowed to fly in the cabin if they meet the requirements.
We’ve temporarily closed and consolidated premium clubs and lounges. Operating hours for clubs that remain open may change based on flight schedules.
We’re limiting food and drink service in the Main Cabin based on flight length and destination. You’re welcome to bring snacks and soft drinks on board to enjoy during your flight.

**Some domestic and short-haul international flights will include a fruit and cheese plate instead of tray meal service and will also have snack basket service before landing.
